Cheap Fun

Who knew dried beans, a couple of bowls, measuring cups, and spoons could be so much fun? When you're feeling cooped up indoors and you need something fresh to do, you start searching anywhere for inspiration, including the kitchen cabinets. It started with me (Judy) looking for something for Jaydon to "string" (like our napkin rings or elbow pasta) and ended up with the dried beans and bowls idea...Jaydon loves to scoop, pour, mix, put things in things and take things out of things; consequently, he loves playing in sand and in the sink with water. The beans are a simple and fantastic indoor substitute for the sand and water. One, they don't require a change of clothes or a bath afterwards. Two, besides the scooping and pouring, running your fingers and hands through the smooth dry beans is very soothing and fun. The day we came up with the idea, Jaydon played throughout the evening and after dinner. His friend, Andrew, came over the next day and they played together doing the same thing.

When they weren't bean playing, they mostly just ran after each other, around and around and around the house, having a glorious time. Notice the yellow T-shirt...
