"Good Morning, Mom. I'm ready to go downstairs and play golf."
You know it's a big deal when it's the first thing he asks to do when he gets up in the morning. Today was nice, too, because he opened with a sweet, "Good Morning, Mom", which just made me melt. He's growing up so fast!
Jaydon's been a fan of golf ever since we watched it on TV a month or two ago. He'd watch and imitate the players. Every now and again he'd ask to watch golf on TV and we were happy to oblige (there are far worse things for a child to watch). It's nice to have the Golf Channel. His "like" of golf turned to an all-out CRAZE about two weeks ago with the purchase of a $4.99 golf set from CVS. Jaydon saw the golf set at the store and was enamoured with it from the get go. When Jaydon first noticed it, he pleaded with me to buy it, but I resisted. We were there specifically to replenish his bubble supply (Jaydon is a bubble blowing maniac - this is something else that entertains him for hours), and I didn't want us to get distracted in the toy aisle. Well, after many more days of watching Jay pretend to play golf, by just swinging his arms around or swinging any other "stick" he could get his hands on, I decided to shell out the big $$ and get the set for him.
He absolutely LOVES his golf set and still LOVES to watch golf on TV. We were in Kentucky for the July 4th weekend (blog and pictures forthcoming); we didn't bring his golf set with us, but he kept talking about golf and asking to watch golf on TV while we were there. Eventually, Nana headed to Big Lots and bought him a little plastic golf set. Again, Jaydon LOVED it! He wore those golf clubs out - literally - we had to duct tape them to keep them together.
So the story is that we've got a budding golfer on our hands. Daddy is very proud. Jay can strike the ball pretty well (for a two-year-old I would think). While we were in Kentucky, Brian's cousin, Josh (he's the Golf Pro at the Maysville Country Club), hooked Jay up with two real golf clubs, for just his size - a putter and an iron. Thank you, Josh! They're righty clubs (as are his toy clubs), but Jay likes to hit lefty. He doesn't mind the difference. We can't get him to switch to right-handed, although he's been right-handed with everything else so far. That said, we might have to get him a lefty set - if not this summer, then next summer for sure. After all, Tiger Woods started playing golf at three-years-old and next summer Jaydon will be three and a half.
A note about the pictures above - Jaydon was the one who came up with the idea about putting the flag in the ground. We helped him stick it in the ground. Then we realized, as he started hitting towards it, that he did it to mimic the flag on a golf green...so clever.
