Yion vs. Lion

Today Jaydon and I were playing with some flashcards (ones that you can practice writing letters with..he really likes them and I was surprised at how well he can do them - Kumon Flash Cards Uppercase Letters Write and Wipe). We came to the "L" card and started talking about it...

Jay: It's a yion.

Me: It's a la-la-la-lion. To make the "L" sound you touch your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Lion.

Jay: La-la-la-lion.

Me (giddy): Yeah! That's exactly how you do it! La-la-la-lion. Lion!

Jay (giddy now too): La-la-la-lion...lion!

We went back and forth like this for a while...also saying other words with an "L" in it. Sometimes he would revert back to the "Y" sound for the "L", but more often he would say it correctly. So it's official...our boy can say the "L" sound! Cool! I never imagined I could explain to Jay how to make the "L" sound...it's funny what you discover if you take a moment to think about it. I can also see why one would be inclined to say a "Y" instead of an "L" sound...it's kinda more work to say an "L". And props to all the speech therapists out there!

Another popular thing for Jaydon to say these days is....."WHY?"...followed by another "Why?"...followed by another "Why?"...followed by another "Why?"...

Makes me nutty sometimes...to say the least. Based on a recommendation from a friend (Thanks, Sarah!), I've started asking Jay to complete the question...He says, "Why?" and I say, "Why what?". He does a good job of formulating a more complete question, and this gives me a bit of breathing room - good for both of us! This also seems to cut short the "why's", or at least I've convinced myself this is true.
