Invitations

We went to Tapas for lunch yesterday. It's a cozy little restaurant. The tables are very close - you have to be careful not to bump into the people seated next to you when you get up from your table. It's all part of the charm of the place. This day, we were seated next to a family of three - Mom, Dad, and their baby boy. The baby was "seated" in a car seat behind Jaydon and his Mom was seated behind me. Jay was ecstatic to be next to the baby. He kept looking at him, smiling at him and talking to me about him. Finally, we introduced ourselves. After all, we were only about 6 inches away from each other. They were very friendly.

In the span of a couple of minutes, Jay had introduced himself to Cody. Jay had invited Cody to our house for his Birthday party when he would be turning four (in December). And Jaydon had invited himself to Cody's first Birthday party, which would be taking place in a few months. Jaydon had it all figured out. Cody seemed to be having a good time through this all. As I was trying to explain to Jaydon that we would not be going to Cody's birthday party, Cody started to get a little fussy. Jay took note, and began telling us all, "I think Cody is hungry." At this point, I figured we should probably let Cody and his Mom off the hook and give them back some privacy.

This is just one example of Jaydon's general friendliness. When Jay and I are walking around anywhere, he pretty much says "hi" to anyone. When we're standing in line at the grocery store, the ice cream shop, the library...and there are other kids around, Jay's not shy about going over and saying "hi" (to the other kids) and then chatting away. It's very cute and fun to watch. In most cases, the other kid(s) are chatty as well. He's very sociable and obviously likes having other kids around to play with him. I wonder if this boldness will last. If so, we are going to have a lot of kids over for his Birthday party this year! Fortunately, he doesn't seem very interested in randomly approaching adults to chat with. That would be very disconcerting. Now is probably a good time to talk about "rules of behavior" with strangers, adults particularly.
