The Fire Station

Our playgroup visited Fire Station No. 1 in Old Wethersfield today and had an absolutely fantastic time! I can't say enough about how wonderful the firefighters were...genuinely good-hearted people and so happy to share their knowledge with the kids. It was also very generous of them to spend time with us considering the Fire Station is run by an all volunteer force. The firefighters that met with us were there during their own free time.

As we were pulling into the parking lot, a fire truck with full sirens blaring roared past our car. Fire trucks are loud and, as we learned during the Maysville July 4th parade last summer, Jaydon doesn't like them up close when their sirens are blaring. Consequently, when we arrived Jaydon was a little hesitant to enter or stay at the fire station. With a little time, however, he was more than happy to stay. The kids learned about firefighting gear and equipment and fire safety. Then they got to climb on a fire truck and take turns "driving". This was a big hit!

Lastly, they had a chance to work the hoses and had a blast (pun intended)!

Afterwards, a few of us went out for pizza. The kids had fun sitting together in the restaurant. As we were leaving, two women at a table next to us commented on how well behaved the kids were...always nice to hear...and as Jaydon walked by they asked him if he had visited the fire house. Jay replied, "No, we visited the fire s-t-a-t-i-o-n"...with extra emphasis on the word "station". Good thing he clarified that for us.
