Nervous Excitement

Last night, for the first time ever, Jaydon asked to wear underwear. We were just getting ready for bed, so I put a pair on him while we did our normal bedtime routine - pajamas (minus the diaper), brush teeth, read books, say prayers. Then I changed him back into a diaper just before he layed down for bed. Then it was into bed without much fuss. Shortly thereafter, Jaydon was sound asleep.

During the day today, Jaydon made no mention about wearing underwear. However, before bedtime tonight, Jaydon not only wanted to wear underwear, he was adamant that he wear his underwear to bed. I was in somewhat of a panic because I'm very unsure he's ready for it, but he's in his underwear now and sound asleep. They say when they're ready, they'll tell you. We'll see how it goes in the morning...and beyond!

So I get Jaydon into bed and then rush to the phone. I need to talk to someone. Brian's in Germany for work, so he's not available for consulation. Instead, I call up an expert - Joyce! Thank goodness for Big Sisters and all the Moms before us (Happy Mothers Day!)! A BIG thank you, Joyce, for all your wisdom, support, encouragement, and calm, and just simply taking the time to listen!

While I'm on the phone with Joyce, I hear Jaydon (through the monitor) say, "Use the potty". I quickly hang up with Joyce, run into his room and we speed to the potty. Jaydon is calm and happy as can be. He gets on his potty, asks to read some books, and we sit and sit and sit. I wonder if his call to use the potty is just a ploy to delay bedtime (what started out as a 7:45pm bedtime turned into a 9pm bedtime). Little did I know that somewhere in the span of the three books that I'd read, he had indeed used the potty.

In one of the books, it asks, "Do you wear diapers, too?" Previously Jaydon would simply reply, "yes" with a big smile. Tonight, he replied, "Jaydon wear underwear". And when we got to the part in the books where the children wear underwear, Jaydon would say, "It's the very same!" and hold up his underwear to the picture in the book.

Jaydon has only worn underwear once before. Make that twice if you include that he wore underwear last night for maybe 20 minutes. About a month ago, I made a big hurrah about going to the store to get big boy underwear with Jaydon. It didn't go quite as I would have hoped (I'll spare you the details), but by the end of that weekend, we decided Jaydon was not ready for it. Not that he had many accidents or anything like that, he just flat out wasn't interested in wearing them. So the idea was tabled and we continued on as before.

Continued on as before = Jaydon uses the potty occasionally for #1. He still hasn't ever gone #2 on the potty, although just in the past week he's started saying, "go poop on the potty". When we change his diaper, we HAVE to examine all its contents. Typically, Jaydon will say things like, "It looks like dirt.", "That's a LOT of pee pee!", or "That's a BIG poo poo!". And then we look at, touch, and feel his clean diaper before putting it on. It's all very academic. Every day we ask, "Would you like to wear your underwear?" and the usual response was a no.
